Here Are Things You Should Never Put Down the Drain

Sometimes a problem with the drain is a result of material blockage. Surprisingly, not everyone knows what must never go down the drain. You will find homeowners putting almost anything down the drain, and what happens next may require the help of a plumber. Putting objects down the drain causes clogging or busted pipes. Fixing the issue can be expensive, and the problem can have more dire consequences if not immediately fixed. If you have a recurring problem with your drain, it could be because of clogging, which means you will need the help of an Alabama-based emergency plumber. The following are things you must never put down the drain if you don’t wish to experience backflow issues or corrosion.

Food Products

Most food products contain grease. Grease and oil can cause a major plumbing problem in the drain. They cause a buildup along the pipes, which grows with time and causes blockage. Furthermore, the grease buildup also catches materials like the flushable, causing further blockage. So, put food products in the kitchen dustbin. Besides the grease buildup, food products cause clogging when poured into the drain. Therefore, always remove food residue when washing utensils in the sinks.

Flushables

Some items come labeled as “flushable.”However, the truth is these items can cause blockage. Flushable wipes, and flushable kitty litter, are all items you may flush down the toilet or sink, only to end up with a backflow issue. They are not as flushable as toilet paper. That means they cannot break down quickly when in contact with water. Therefore, the best way is to dispose of them in another method, like simply putting them in your dustbin.

Cleaning Products

Other things you must never pour down the drain are cleaning products. Many cleaning and beauty products are not favorable to the plumbing system due to the number of chemicals they contain. Always choose shampoos and soaps that do not contain sulfates, phthalates, and parabens when using cleaning products. Other items that should never find their way into the drain include tissues, cotton swabs, floss, paper towels, feminine hygiene items, etc. Such things cause clogging in the pipes once flushed down the drain.

Chemicals or Medicines

Not putting any medication into the sink or toilet is also advisable. Although it is common, many people don’t realize that most water treatment plants are not created to remove such chemicals from the water. Therefore, tossing chemicals and medication down the drain can severely affect your health and the environment. Furthermore, some products contain harsh chemicals that cause corrosion in the pipes. That means you may need to replace your pipes sooner than you expected.

Bottom Line

Sometimes you may only know the harm you are doing to your drain once an issue occurs. However, being aware of the things you should not put in your drain is crucial and one way of keeping the drain effective. There are many things you should never put in the drain. Such chemicals are corrosive, which affects the pipes. Therefore, watch what you put there and try habits that will help keep the drain clean.
