What are the Signs I Need Surgery for My Ankle Injury?

Ankle injuries are never fun to deal with. There are things you can do on your own to relieve the pain, but some persistent ankle injuries will require ankle ligament surgery.

What are Common Ankle Injuries?

Every injury is different and some ankle injuries require just some tender loving care, but others require more aggressive treatment.

Ankle sprains can usually heal with some ice, rest, and elevation. However, ankle fractures will require a little bit more treatment. This also goes for Achilles tendon injuries which range from tears, ruptures, and tendonitis.

Every ankle injury should include rest, ice, medications, physical therapy, and even orthotics before turning to surgery.

Why Ankle Surgery?

When traditional treatment such as physical therapy, rest, and medication fails, then the next best answer is ankle surgery.

Ankle fracture surgery is one of the most common types of surgery. This is when a stable internal fixation is screwed onto the bone to help align them properly after a fibula or tibia is fractured.

Patients will need to avoid placing weight on their ankle for up to 10 weeks. After several weeks of physical therapy, ankle fractures can be expected to heal.

When to Turn to Ankle Surgery

After experiencing an ankle injury, always receive an evaluation from a podiatrist for the correct diagnosis and treatment plan.

Once treatment has started, if your ankle is still feeling unstable and weak, surgery will be recommended.

Your doctor will perform x-rays and decide which surgery is the best option for you and your injury.
