There may be no other type of clothing as beloved as the T-shirt. Just about everybody owns at least a couple of T-shirts. Some people don’t own any other type of shirt. And of course, they come in all different colors, styles, etc.
So what’s the deal? Why do we seem to love our T-shirts so much? There probably isn’t just one answer that applies to everybody. So rather than try to pinpoint something specific, maybe it’s better to consider the top five possibilities. Here they are:
Table of Contents
1. T-Shirts Are Incredibly Comfortable
I cannot speak for anyone else, but I can say the reason at the top of my list is comfort. I haven’t found another shirt as comfortable as a T-shirt. Nothing compares to that soft, tightly knit fabric T-shirts are known for.
There are times I cannot avoid wearing a button-down shirt with a tie. Every now and again I have to wear a sweatshirt or a sweater. But no matter what, I always find myself looking forward to getting out of the stuffy clothes and into a comfortable T-shirt.
2. T-Shirts Are Easy to Care For
The T-shirt is the perfect article of clothing for people who don’t like putting a lot of effort into caring for their clothes. You can throw T-shirts in the wash with just about anything. Same for the dryer. They don’t need ironing, either. About the only thing you need to do is hit them with stain remover every now and again – when you spill something.
3. T-Shirts Are Pretty Cheap
Budget-minded clothing shoppers appreciate T-shirts because they are pretty cheap. You can get a decent T-shirt for as little as $10 if you know where to look. Sure, you can spend $50 or more on a designer piece if you want to, but you don’t have to go that high.
4. T-Shirts Can Carry a Message
It is impossible to have a discussion about T-shirts without mentioning the fact that they can carry a message. It would be interesting to know just how many plain T-shirts are sold each year as compared to graphic tees. The great thing about graphic tees is that very little is out of bounds. If you want to wear T-shirts displaying the logos of your favorite sports teams, that’s fine. The NFL, NHL, etc., all have their T-shirts.
If you are into politics or social causes, you have plenty of choices too. The Plurawl brand, based in New York City, is a perfect example. They design and sell T-shirts promoting LatinX pride and authenticity. The point is that there is no shortage of messaging opportunities. Everything is on the table.
5. T-Shirts Are Fashion Agnostic
Last but not least, T-shirts are fashion agnostic. This is to say that they go with just about everything. You can wear T-shirts with jeans and shorts. They look fine with full-length skirts and minis. You can wear a T-shirt with a dinner jacket or your leathers. It all works.
Of course, you still need to pay attention to coordinating what you wear. You wouldn’t want to wear a yellow and black striped T-shirt with a pair of black pants unless you were purposely going for the bumblebee look. That’s cool if it’s your thing.
T-shirts are universal clothing for men, women, and children. If it weren’t for the beloved T-shirt, many of us would not know what to wear on our upper bodies. Thank goodness that’s not a problem. T-shirts are easy to find, easy to wear, and easy to take care of. That is it in a nutshell.
